The Archibald Prize is awarded annually to the best portrait, 'preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’.

Established in 1921, The Archibald is sponsored by the Art Gallery of NSW, bringing together artists from all around Australia.

The very first time I entered the Archibald Prize was in response to a bet made that if Gordon Merchant (Founder of Billabong Surfwear) would agree to sit for me I would enter the portrait in the competition.

Knowing that Gordon is a quiet and somewhat reclusive character, I laughed and said "Sure - I'll do it!" not thinking for a moment he would agree. Well, he agreed, so I had to do it!

Entering the Archibald has taught me a lot - the process of entering competitions, pushing my art to another level and learning the process of working from life with my subject. It has encouraged me to try different ideas - all in all it's been a great experience for me! I can't wait to reveal my 2021 entry to you.
